3M considerations
NOTE: You must obtain licenses to use both the 3M and ARM options. When using 3M, an entity is related to a 3M-authorized site name. When using ARM, you can select any available contract.
3M groups inpatient encounters into Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRGs) or All Patients Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRGs), depending on the facilities' licensing agreements and contract terms. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) use MS-DRGs, while some state-specific payers (such as Medicaid) may use APR-DRGs.
3M groups outpatient services into Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APCs) that are CMS- and Medicare-based or Enhanced Ambulatory Patient Groups (eAPGs) that are state-specific (such as Medicaid).
Separate licensing is required for 3M. If you have multiple entities, you can license different schemes (MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, eAPGs, APCs) for different entities.
You may also have an entity that does not use 3M. When creating definitions, the option for 3M is visible. Hovering on an informational icon informs you that additional licensing is required.
